Because Bugs and Weeds are not Enough…

Deer. The deer have helped themselves to several sunflowers. I guess I shouldn’t complain because other flower farmers and gardeners see a tremendous amount of damage to their flowers from deer voraciously eating everything in sight. But things were going along so well, and I really thought we might not see any deer issues this late in the season. I guess the sunflowers were just too tempting for them to pass by. They bit their heads off! I mean, it was pretty rude.

We know we have deer come through our yard and even, at times, bed down here over night.  Having the deer eat our flower garden was always a known risk. Truly, I am grateful that, so far, we have only lost a few sunflowers. I do recognize that it could be much worse, but honestly, did they have to bite their heads off! Maybe I should have planted branching sunflowers and the deer could have helped with pinching!
